Negative Effects of Alcohol Use for Athletes

  • High calories in alcohol that can contribute to weight gain – 1 standard bottle of beer has the same amount of calories as 3 chocolate chip cookies! Think about how quickly that can add up and break your calorie budget.
  • Dehydration
  • Binge drinking can make your soft tissue injuries worse, extending recovery
  • Slower decision‐making, altered decision making
  • Decreased performance and increased risk of injury if active while hung‐over or drinking
  • Addiction and dependency
  • Chronic alcohol consumption can also affect your finances!
  • Chronic use may impair your body’s ability to absorb and utilize certain nutrients
