A new study from James Madison University presented at the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual meeting suggests that drinking chocolate milk after your workout provides superior muscle recovery when compared to a high-carbohydrate recovery beverage with the same amount of calories.
Hydration
Fluids are essential for human life. It’s intuitive, since 60-75% of our bodies are made out of water! Fluids lubricate joints and tissues, dissolve and transport nutrients, remove waste products and help with temperature regulation. For the general population, the daily recommendations for fluid intake from beverages (water, milk, chocolate milk, juice etc.) are as follows:
Athletes put in countless hours at the gym, on the field and at the rink in order to train and compete at 100% of their physical potential. A well-timed and balanced recovery nutrition plan is critical to ensure training goals are met and that an athlete’s body is ready for the next day’s punishment.

Our very own nutrition specialist, Jennifer Gibson, spent some time in the spotlight yesterday morning as she discussed the dietary needs of an Olympic athlete on Breakfast Television. As the nutritionist for the Canadian National Snowboard Team, Jennifer is going to be making sure our athletes are eating right. Among her recommendations for foods that help to create the optimal race-day diet were oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, and plenty of fluids including….you guessed it: chocolate milk!
